Making Mistakes…

What are some of the biggest mistakes you’ve made? If you could turn back time, would you go back and change things? Or have those mistakes taught you something so valuable that you would live them over again?

As I sat down to ponder this quote, I made a little chart. On one side it says “My Mistakes” and on the other side “The Lesson”. I went through some of the biggest mistakes I have made in my life so far and the lesson that came out of that mistake. I thought about what would have happened if I wouldn’t have tried that new thing, done that wrong thing, or put myself in relationships with the wrong people.

As I was jotting things down, I realized that my daughter is going through a lot of the same mistakes as me. It made me realize that the biggest mistakes I made, mostly during my 20s, were the times when I was trying all kinds of new things and learning what I needed to create the lifestyle I have now.

When I thought more of her rambunctious behavior, current lifestyle choices, and relationships with other people, I realized that this is all her “something new” that she needs to try to create the path in her life that will end up fulfilling because the mistakes will become her lessons.

It gave me a new mindset, a new perspective. One that includes more letting her do her own thing and less mom being disappointed at those. This is her phase of life to make mistakes because she is trying everything new.

If I could turn back time, would I make some different choices? Of course! There are always things I could avoid or change that would be beneficial now. But if I changed one thing, or a few things, or something major would I be where I am today? It’s like the time travel rule that you can go back in time but you can’t see yourself or interact with yourself because it could alter your future. I would never go back and do anything that would remove my children from my life. I would never go back and miss out of the fun and the love that I received. I would never want to change the lessons learned because I wouldn’t be who I am today.

Would you do it? Would you go back and change it all? Would you go back and change just a few things? What would happen if you didn’t try something new in your past? Would your future be drastically altered? Would those mistakes happen anyway, just at a different time?

These are the questions that can keep a person up all night. Good thing I journal in the mornings!

Go out there and try something new today. Make a mistake. Learn a lesson.

But most of all…
