The art of influencing…
I don’t have the hypnotic powers to steal an audience for a long period of time with some grandiose speech. I’m not a social media superstar posting Tik Toks and Reels with thousands of followers. My style of influence is through creativity and ideas. I get to influence other women by painting with them, doing a craft, or trying the same old same old just in a different way.
When I surround myself with women who are interested in creating a way to make a change in their life, I am able to influence them with my experiences and stories. I share the thing that worked for me and the things that didn’t. I listen to how they speak and decipher what strengths they have. I pull from their stories the ability to create a plan and influence them to follow it.
But one of my biggest struggles is influencing myself to do these things. This is what I need to learn to master.
For example, I know that I have put on some extra COVID weight (more than the +20 that everyone talks about). I have seen some recent pictures of myself and I’m not so thrilled. I have books and journals and recipes and programs all over my house. But do I actually dust one off and do something with it? Of course not! But if a woman comes to me and says, “Hey, I’m struggling with some extra weight. What would you suggest?” I can come up with a 30 day cleanse routine, an exercise journal, and a food plan along with a local resource who is amazing at helping women with their nutrition. I get excited about creating a plan with someone else, seeing them succeed, and supporting them the entire way.
Now, do I do that for myself? Of course not!
Another example, my house is a mess. With little kids there’s always a toy or a game or a dirty sock lying around. Pick one up and three more appear. I will be sitting on the couch thinking of all the fun ways to have chore charts and toy pickup games and reward systems. I’ve shared some of those with my other mom friends. They have worked in the past at our house, but do I have it implemented right now? Of course not!
There are several things that I have plans, ideas, strategies, and challenges created for but I do not follow my own teachings. Is it because I’m so busy teaching others? No. It’s because I have not mastered the art of influencing myself to get up off my ass and do something. I think we’ve all had those moments where we know what needs to be done but we just don’t do it. And then we beat ourselves up about it and say we’re going to do it, first thing tomorrow I’m gonna pick up that dumb bell or clean out the fridge or get that toy organizer. Tomorrow comes and goes. “There’s always tomorrow!” No, there’s never tomorrow. It’s either today or yesterday.
So how to I begin to influence myself? Where do I start to place these programs and ideas into motion within my own life? What do I need to do to make the changes?
I think writing all this down and sharing it with you all is the first step to influencing myself. Better get busy.
